Black Point Quarry Project
Project Description
The Black Point Quarry Project will consist of aggregate production, along with constructing and operating a marine terminal in Chedabucto Bay, adjacent to the quarry. The quarry development and aggregate production will be on an undeveloped, 354-hectare (ha) property in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. The Black Point Quarry is anticipated to have capital costs of approximately US$80-$110 million and will be a significant employer in Guysborough County throughout the expected 70+ year lifespan of the quarry.
Quarried rock will be blasted, crushed, screened, washed, and stockpiled on-site. The primary crushed stone produced is anticipated to be 57s and 89s with various iterations for state-specific needs. The product will be loaded into bulk carrier ships for transport to markets along the eastern and Gulf Coast markets of the United States. The average annual production rate will exceed 1.0 MT, with an anticipated peak annual production of 7.5 MT, depending on prevailing market conditions.
The Project is to be developed in two phases, Phase I (Year 1 to Year 10) and Phase II (Year 11 to Year 70), for a total operating timeline of 70 years. Phase I will develop approximately 160.28 ha of the project footprint, while Phase II will develop an additional 77.15 ha, for a combined development footprint of 237.43 ha over the life of the Project.
The Project will employ approximately 120-150 employees during the construction stage (i.e., the first three years) and approximately 50-60 employees for the remainder (i.e., operations stage) of the Project. Staffing roles are still to be determined but are anticipated to consist of an Area Manager, Plant Manager, Plant Supervisor, Pit Supervisor, Maintenance Supervisor (mobile and fixed equipment), Electrical Supervisor, Blasting Supervisor, Marine Terminal Supervisor, Quality Control Supervisor, Health, Safety & Environmental Coordinators, Equipment Operators, Maintenance Personnel, Plant Office Administrator and additional supporting and administrative staff.
